Who we are
CrispSpeech (Crisp Speech Inc, 633 Meadowcrest Drive, Highland Village, TX 75077) makes a speech-practice app used by children with their speech-language pathologists and families. Questions about privacy: privacy@crispspeech.com. Privacy officer: Paul Staudacher.
The short version
- We collect what a child's speech practice needs: their voice saying practice words, and a few account details.
- We collect it only after a parent or guardian signs a permission form.
- The child's therapist, the practice's staff and the small team that runs CrispSpeech can see it. Nobody else.
- No advertising. No tracking. We never sell or rent anyone's information.
- A parent can see everything we hold about their child, have it deleted, or stop collection at any time.
What we collect from a child
| Information | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Voice recordings of practice words and sentences | Every practice take | The app scores the take and the therapist listens and grades it |
| Video of the child's mouth during check-ins | Only if the parent ticked the video permission and the camera is on | So the therapist can see how the mouth makes each sound |
| First name or nickname used to sign in | Set up by the therapist or parent | To sign in and address the child |
| Birth month and year, and interests (like "dinosaurs") | Entered by a parent or therapist | To fit stories and word lists to the child's age and tastes |
| Practice results: words practiced, the app's scores, the therapist's grades, check-in summaries, practice plan, points and prizes | As the child practices | To run and track practice |
| Technical information: the browser type and a sign-in cookie | Automatically | To keep the child signed in and troubleshoot recording problems |
We do not collect a child's full birth date, address, phone number, email address, location, contacts or photos, and a child cannot post anything publicly or talk to other users in the app.
What we collect from parents and staff
A parent's name, email address and relationship to the child (for the permission form), and for staff a name, email and sign-in details. Parents and staff may practice along; their voices are scored and not saved.
How we use it
To provide speech practice and feedback, to let the therapist review and grade recordings and plan therapy, to keep the service secure, and โ only with the separate permission described below โ to improve how well the app hears children's speech.
Artificial intelligence
As part of providing speech practice, the app uses AI services to write coaching tips, practice stories and the therapist's screening summary; the permission form says so. These run inside Amazon Web Services. We send word lists, scores and what the app heard; we do not send the child's name. If a parent also allowed mouth video, a few still frames from check-in clips may be included in the screening summary. The AI provider does not use this information to train its models.
Improving the speech recognizer
Only if a parent ticks the separate, optional box: that child's recordings may be used to improve the app's ability to hear children's speech. A parent can withdraw this at any time, and those recordings are then removed from that use.
Who we share it with
- The child's speech-language pathologist and their practice.
- Our service provider, Amazon Web Services, which hosts the app, stores the data, sends our email and runs the AI, under contract and only to provide those services.
- When the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.
We do not share children's information with advertisers, data brokers, analytics companies or social networks, and the app contains no third-party trackers. A child's device talks only to CrispSpeech.
A parent's choices and rights
At any time, a parent or guardian can:
- See everything we hold about their child โ in the app (๐ My points โ grown-ups โ Download data) or by asking.
- Delete it โ ask the therapist or email privacy@crispspeech.com. We delete recordings and records, including backup copies, within 30 days.
- Withdraw permission in whole or in part (for example, video or AI only). Collection stops at once.
- Refuse โ we never require more information than the app needs, and withdrawing does not affect the therapy a child receives.
We verify that a request comes from the child's parent or guardian through the practice's records.
How long we keep it
While the child is an active client and for 12 months after their last practice session, then it is deleted. Recordings used to improve the recognizer (with that separate permission) are kept until the parent withdraws. Details: our retention policy, available from privacy@crispspeech.com.
How we protect it
Encrypted in transit and at rest; stored in the United States; available only to signed-in people with a need; staff accounts protected with two-step sign-in and automatic sign-out; every view of a child's information is logged. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your child's information we will tell you promptly.
Children's privacy (COPPA)
CrispSpeech is designed for children under 13 and follows the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. We collect a child's information only with verifiable parental consent, given on our permission form.
Health information
When we provide the app to a practice that is covered by HIPAA, we handle its patients' information as that practice's business associate under a written agreement. Texas law (Health & Safety Code ch. 181) also applies to health information we hold.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell parents by email before it takes effect and ask for new permission where the law requires it.
